Diarrhea isn't pleasant to talk about and even less pleasant to experience personally. You can't eat, you have stomach diarrheacramps and you make frequent trips to the bathroom. In short, diarrhea in Houston, TX puts your day-to-day routine on hold. What can you do? if this uncomfortable gastrointestinal condition persists for more than two days, contact board-certified gastroenterologist, Dr. Vikram Jayanty. His kind attitude and extensive expertise will uncover the causes for your condition and help you heal.

The symptoms of diarrhea

They become all too familiar to us at one time or other. In fact, most children and adults experience one to two bouts of diarrhea yearly. Symptoms include:

  • Very frequent, very watery stools
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Nausea
  • Sore rectal area
  • Dehydration
  • Loss of appetite

Usually, diarrhea from the flu or even food poisoning resolves within a day or two. However, if you have an accompanying fever, chills, bloody stools and persistent vomiting, consult Dr. Jayanty at his Houston office about your diarrhea.

Causes of diarrhea

They vary from a simple cold or flu and spoiled food to overly spicy foods and anxiety or stress. More serious sources of diarrhea include:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS
  • Crohn's Disease, or ulcerative colitis
  • Celiac disease (sensitivity to gluten)
  • Lactose intolerance (when patients lack the enzyme which helps digest diary products)
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Allergies
  • Malabsorption related to advanced age or congenital defect

When a patient presents with symptoms of diarrhea, Dr. Jayanty performs a physical examination, takes a medical and prescription history and also listens carefully to the individual's complaints. His leading edge gastroenterology practice offers such diagnostic tests such as gastroscopy, endoscopy, colonoscopy, lactose and fructose intolerance testing, and more. The American Academy of Family Physicians says that a simple stool test can find hidden blood or parasites, helping the doctor hone in on possible causes for diarrhea.

Treatment for diarrhea

Dr. Jayanty offers these recommendations for simple cases of diarrhea. All of them aim to soothe the GI tract, hydrate and get you back to your normal routines.

Recommendations include:

  1. Clear liquids such as water, broth, sports drinks, Jello and juices (no pulp).
  2. Advancement of diet to bland foods such as rice, bananas, and dry toast.
  3. Taking antibiotics and/or over the counter anti-diarrhea medications such as Kaopectate and Immodium as appropriate
  4. Avoiding offending foods that have a high spice, fiber, dairy, gluten or caffeine content.
