Colon Cancer Screening & Prevention

Did you know that colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in this country? It’s true, according to the American Cancer Society. Fortunately, colonoscopy with removal of precancerous polyps and appropriate follow up colonoscopies can significantly prevent colorectal cancer as well as diagnosing if a cancer is already there! Colonoscopy screenings and a few lifestyle tips can dramatically reduce your risk of developing colon cancer. Our gastroenterologist Dr. Vikram Jayanty in Houston, TX can tell you more.

When You Need a Colon Cancer Screening

You should have a colon cancer screening by the time you are 45 years old, or if you are experiencing:

  • Acute or Chronic abdominal pain
  • Recurrent diarrhea or constipation
  • Blood in your stool
  • Changes in bowel habits or shape and calibré of the dtools

Preparation for a Colon Cancer Prevention and Screening

A colon cancer screening is typically performed with a procedure known as a colonoscopy. Preparation before the colonoscopy includes being on a liquid diet and taking laxatives to clean out your colon. Don’t take any blood thinning medications, including NSAIDs the day before the procedure. Bring a driver with you, because you will be sedated for the colonoscopy.

During the Colon Cancer Prevention and Screening

During the colonoscopy procedure, a thin flexible tube, known as a colonoscope, is inserted into your rectum and guided up into your colon. The colonoscope has a camera on one end, which enables your gastroenterologist to view your colon. If any abnormal tissue or growths are seen, our gastroenterologist can remove them for a biopsy.

How You Can Help Prevent Colon Cancer

There are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing colon cancer. You should:

  • Quit smoking and limit your consumption of alcohol
  • Limit consumption of red meat including beef, pork, and lamb
  • Eat a more plant-based diet of fruit and green, leafy vegetables
  • Eat fiber-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains
