FAQ About Gastroenterology

From frequent heartburn to abdominal pain, many issues bring people into our Houston, TX, office. Our board-certified gastroenterologist Dr. Vikram Jayanty and his team have helped countless individuals, from children and teens to seniors, manage and treat digestive issues and disorders. When it comes to digestive health, we hear a lot of the same questions. Here are the answers you’re looking for.

What does a gastroenterologist do?

A gastroenterologist is a medical doctor that specializes in preventing, diagnosing, treating, and managing any conditions, injuries, or diseases that impact the gastrointestinal tract. This includes everything from the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder to the esophagus, stomach, and intestines.

Who should get screened for colorectal cancer?

Everyone, regardless of their risk factors, should get screened for colorectal cancer by the age of 50 (this includes both men and women). People at an increased risk for colorectal cancer may want to speak with our team about whether or not they should start getting screened earlier. If the results of your colonoscopy are normal and you are at low risk for colorectal cancer you may only need to get screened every 10 years. This is something that Dr. Jayanty and his team can discuss with you during your consultation.

When should I see a gastroenterologist?

While a general practitioner may be able to address more minor symptoms that impact the gastrointestinal tract, they don’t specialize in treating or diagnosing these conditions. Here at our practice, Dr. Jayanty and his team have a full range of screening and diagnostic tools at their disposal to be able to provide an accurate and swift diagnosis and treatment plan. Most people who come into our office do so because they are experiencing,

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bowel changes (e.g. diarrhea, constipation, or both)
  • Heartburn
  • Persistent or severe abdominal pain
  • Rectal pain
  • Blood in the stool

What should I expect when visiting a gastroenterologist?

When you come into our practice, we will have you provide your detailed medical history as well as the reason for your visit. Your vital signs and weight and height will be recorded before our gastroenterologist sees you. During your visit with Dr. Javanty, he will go through your medical history and ask you questions about your symptoms to get a better idea of what’s going on and what tests to perform. From there, we will order all necessary tests such as blood tests, a colonoscopy or endoscopy, or X-rays. Once these tests have been performed, you’ll come back to our office for follow-up and to discuss treatment options with our team.
